University of Ibadan

Founded in 1948 as Nigeria inaugural university college and granted independence in 1962, the University of Ibadan (UI) stands as the oldest degree-awarding institution in the country and a cornerstone of West African scholarship. Situated on a verdant 1,032-hectare campus in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, UI brings together 17 faculties housing 92 departments and a combined academic and professional staff body exceeding 5,339 personnel, serving roughly 33,000 enrolled students. The institution scholarly influence reaches far beyond its campus through a network of specialist institutes: the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT) conducts flagship programmes in infectious disease vaccinology, the Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law bridges academia and Nigeria hydrocarbon industry, and the Institute of African Studies maintains a globally cited archive of cultural and linguistic scholarship. UI veterinary and agricultural faculties have shaped Nigeria food security policies for decades, while the zoology and botany departments run biodiversity surveys across the West African forest belt. The university collaborates with WHO, USAID, and the MRC on clinical trial programmes addressing malaria, Lassa fever, and non-communicable diseases, and it regularly sends delegations to Wellcome Trust and NIH funding panels. Postgraduate throughput reaches over 2,000 MSc and PhD awards annually, and UI researchers contribute several hundred Scopus-indexed articles each year across medicine, veterinary science, and the natural sciences.
