Universitas Gadjah Mada
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is Indonesia oldest and most prestigious research university, officially founded on 19 December 1949 in Yogyakarta. As a symbol of Indonesian national identity, UGM was the country first national university established after independence and has since grown into a world-class institution enrolling approximately 55,000 students across 18 faculties, 24 research centres, and 68 undergraduate programmes. UGM ranks among the top 250 universities globally in QS World University Rankings and holds a top 50 Asia position for life sciences and medicine. The university research enterprise spans 24 dedicated research centres covering population studies, tropical agriculture, biotechnology, and energy innovation. UGM is particularly renowned for its Faculty of Medicine, which pioneered community health approaches that became models for Indonesian healthcare policy, and its Faculty of Agriculture, which has led tropical agronomy research for over seven decades. The university produces over 4,000 research publications annually and receives substantial funding from the Indonesian government, international development banks, and private industry partnerships. UGM Centre for Biotechnology and Biodiversity Research is among the most active in Southeast Asia.
