Paula Fredrikson is a historian of medicine and cognitive neuroscientist whose interdisciplinary work traces how cultural frameworks of religious experience and moral panic have shaped psychiatric categorization. Her NIMH-funded comparative imaging work provided the first quantitative neuroimaging distinguishing ecstatic religious states from prodromal psychosis.
