Massachusetts General Hospital / MIT
Emery Brown is both a practicing anesthesiologist and a statistical neuroscientist whose work reconceptualized anesthesia as a drug-induced coma whose neural mechanisms can be tracked in real time using EEG spectral signatures. His group's identification of the frontal alpha-power surge as a biomarker of loss of consciousness led to FDA-cleared monitoring protocols. He is one of fewer than 20 researchers in American history elected to all three National Academies and is a MacArthur Fellow.
