Institut d'Optique / École Polytechnique
Alain Aspect performed the landmark 1982 experiments that closed the locality loophole in tests of Bell's inequalities, providing the strongest experimental evidence then available that quantum entanglement is a real physical phenomenon incompatible with local hidden-variable theories. Sharing the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger, his work is foundational to all modern quantum information science, including quantum cryptography and quantum computing. At Institut d'Optique he subsequently developed atom laser technology and, with Philippe Grangier, demonstrated single-photon anti-bunching experiments central to quantum optics pedagogy. Aspect serves on the scientific board of Pasqal, a neutral-atom quantum computing company spun out of his academic environment, bridging his foundational physics to commercial quantum hardware. He is a Grand Officier of the Légion d'honneur and a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.
