Coral Reef Ecology
Coral reef ecology investigates the biological, physical, and chemical processes sustaining coral reef ecosystems—among the most species-rich environments on Earth, covering less than 0.1% of the ocean floor yet harboring roughly 25% of all marine species. Reef ecologists study the intricate mutualism between corals and their photosynthetic endosymbionts Symbiodiniaceae, trophic webs linking zooplankton, invertebrates, and diverse fish communities, and carbonate chemistry governing reef calcification under ocean acidification. Climate change poses an existential threat: mass bleaching events triggered by thermal anomalies have devastated reefs globally, with the Great Barrier Reef experiencing four mass bleaching events since 2016.
