Ethiopia
Ethiopia is sub-Saharan Africa's second most populous nation and one of its fastest-growing research producers, driven by an ambitious national science and innovation strategy. Addis Ababa University is the continent's leading Ethiopian institution and co-leads flagship international research on malaria, TB, and HIV with the WHO and NIH. Agricultural science is a national priority, with EIAR coordinating a network of regional research centers focused on food security and drought-resilient crop varieties. Nutrition epidemiology has emerged as a globally cited specialty given Ethiopia's longstanding public-health challenges. Significant investment in university expansion since 2010 has more than doubled the graduate researcher pipeline.
