# Susumu Tonegawa

> Susumu Tonegawa received the 1987 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine as a sole laureate for discovering the genetic mechanism of antibody diversity (V(D)J recombination). He later pivoted to neuroscience, pioneering optogenetic engram manipulation — activating and erasing specific memories in hippocampal circuits — and showing engram cells store retrievable information in Alzheimer's mouse models.
