# M. Stanley Whittingham

> M. Stanley Whittingham pioneered the use of intercalation chemistry that became the foundation of the lithium-ion battery. He shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and continues to develop higher-energy electrode materials for energy storage.
