# Jean Tirole

> Jean Tirole is a French economist at the Toulouse School of Economics who received the 2014 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his analysis of market power and regulation. Tirole transformed the field of industrial organization by developing rigorous game-theoretic models of firm behavior, strategic interaction, and the design of optimal regulatory policies for firms with market power. His work with Jean-Jacques Laffont on the theory of incentive regulation demonstrated how to design regulatory contracts that overcome informational asymmetries between regulators and regulated firms — a framework adopted in many countries for regulating utilities, telecommunications, and transportation. Tirole also made foundational contributions to the economics of two-sided markets — platforms that serve multiple groups of users, such as credit card networks, operating systems, and internet platforms — whose regulatory implications are now central to antitrust policy worldwide. His textbook with Drew Fudenberg on game theory and his book The Theory of Industrial Organization shaped a generation of economists.
