# Donald Knuth

> Donald Knuth is an American computer scientist, Professor Emeritus of The Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University, and one of the most revered figures in the history of computer science. He received the Turing Award in 1974 for his contributions to the analysis of algorithms and the design of programming languages, and in particular for his multi-volume work The Art of Computer Programming (TAOCP). Begun in 1962 and still in progress, TAOCP is a comprehensive treatise on the mathematical foundations and practical analysis of computer algorithms covering sorting, searching, seminumerical algorithms, and combinatorial algorithms. The work introduced the rigorous analysis of algorithm efficiency, popularized the O (big-O) notation for describing asymptotic complexity, and established the standards for algorithm documentation and analysis that define the field. Knuth's contributions span an extraordinary breadth: he designed the TeX typesetting system and Metafont font description language, which together have been the universal standard for scientific and mathematical typesetting for four decades; invented literate programming, a paradigm for writing programs as explanations interleaved with code; and made fundamental contributions to LR parsing, attribute grammars, and the theory of formal languages. His analysis of algorithms work encompasses the precise probabilistic analysis of data structures including hashing, trees, and sorting networks. He has received the National Medal of Science, the John von Neumann Medal, the Kyoto Prize, the Harvey Prize, and numerous honorary doctorates. His precision, depth, and commitment to mathematical rigor set the intellectual standard for theoretical computer science.
